Chancellor ‘to call for a soft Brexit’

-

THE Chancellor is to push for a soft Brexit, it was reported yesterday.

Philip Hammond is said to be planning to call for the UK to remain in the EU customs union.

He has gained new power after Theresa May had to backtrack on plans to sack him after losing her majority in the election.

Brexit talks are due to start on Monday, with Mrs still trying to cut a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party to keep her in power.

Ex-Chancellor Ken Clarke has called for cross-party support for an EU deal.

He told the BBC: “You can’t negotiate on the basis every aspect has to be discussed with the DUP to get their vote. The Conservatives and the DUP are split on the issue.”
