56 YEARS AGO (1961)

Soviet ballet star Rudolf Nureyev, principal dancer of the Leningrad Kirov Ballet, defected to the West after shaking off his guards at a Paris airport. He became principal dancer at the Royal Ballet.

43 YEARS AGO (1974)

The IRA bombed the Houses of Parliament, injuring 11 people and rupturing a gas main causing fire to spread rapidly through the palace. The police had managed to clear most of the building after the Press Association received a telephone warning from a man with an Irish accent six minutes before the device exploded.
