Seeking justice

BBC2, 9pm

TELEVISION is never so cruel as when a major character is ruthlessly killed off.

Fans of this Victorian period drama took to social media in their droves at the end of the last series as Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn) met a grisly end.

Shell-shocked, their emotions in tatters, viewers complained of broken hearts as the craggy-faced detective had his throat ripped out by cannibal Nathaniel. It was sad and downright gory as Bennet choked out the words, “No more fighting”.

So it will come as no surprise that this fifth and final series will see our remaining heroes fighting for justice.

As Bennet’s funeral takes place, Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen), Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) and Long Susan (MyAnna Buring) are plotting. Hiding out in a sewer, they are being hunted by the police for the killing of Long Susan’s father, Theodore Swift, and they need to figure out their next move in order to get back on to the streets of Whitechapel – and track down Bennet’s murderer.

But before they can do that, they need food and shelter, and probably a good bath.

Meanwhile, seeking the wanted trio with a dogged persistence is Assistant Commissioner Augustus Dove (Killian Scott). He must do all he can to capture Reid before he is able to reveal the truth to the world – that the serial killer, Nathaniel, is Dove’s brother. “So what are we to do, Reid?” asks Jackson. But Reid always knows what to do. “We go and get our justice or the heavens fall.”
