Carr: Cam was right to blast my £3m scheme

- BY ASHLEIGH RAINBIRD Deputy Showbiz Editor

SHAMED Jimmy Carr has admitted his multi-million-pound tax scheme came “bloody close” to fraud.

The comic was revealed to be stashing £3.3million a year in a Jersey-based fund which cut his tax bill to just 1%. In 2012, during a G20 Summit, PM David Cameron branded the K2 tax avoidance scheme “morally wrong”.

Carr, 44, said: “The Prime Minister breaks off from a G20 Summit – that is going to be a problem.”

But when he “bumped into” Mr Cameron three months later, they did not speak about it. Carr said: “We were so very British about the whole thing. We had a conversation and did not mention it. He did the right thing. I was avoiding tax. I was not evading tax, but I was avoiding tax and shouldn’t have been. It turned out it was not fraud but it was bloody close.” But he said he had the last laugh on Cameron, as “I have still got my job”.
