Industry watchdog the Financial Conduct Authority is investigating the challenges cancer patients face trying to get travel insurance.
An FCA report found people with pre-existing medical conditions, especially cancer, are struggling to find affordable, or any, travel insurance.
This is leading many people to not disclose existing conditions when taking out cover, leaving them at risk of hefty medical bills as insurers reject claims. Around 2.5 million people are living with, and after, cancer. This is forecast to rise to 4 million by 2030.
Despite being declared fit for travel, cancer sufferers are being quoted silly amounts such as £2,800 for a single trip abroad. The FCA has asked the industry to give evidence on this issue so it can improve the situation for consumers.
Christopher Woolard, executive director of strategy and competition at the FCA, said: “Being able to access financial services is critical for people to fully participate in society.”
