Sir Vince, 74, in contest to lead Lib Dems

- BY DAN BLOOM Political Reporter

VETERAN Sir Vince Cable yesterday became the first to enter the contest for the leadership of the Lib Dems.

The 74-year-old wrote on the Lib Dem Voice website: “With the prospect of another election looming large, we must be ready for the fight.”

If elected to take over from Tim Farron, Sir Vince will be the oldest major party leader since Winston Churchill, who was 80 when he stood down.

Mr Cable told the BBC that “some of the brightest people in British politics have been relatively old”.

Jo Swinson, once the youngest MP in Westminster, has been elected unopposed as deputy leader.
