Wolseley saw UK sales dip 0.4% in the three months to May. The drop adds to evidence of a slowdown in consumer spending. But better trading in the US, its biggest market, meant group sales rose 4.6%.

Budget airline Ryanair has announced an £870million order for another 10 Boeing 737 aircraft. The deal, together with a separate order for 100 planes, is aimed at growing passenger numbers to 200 million a year by 2024.

HSBC is creating 500 new jobs in Scotland as it expands operations north of the border. Extra staff are being taken on at the bank’s global risk business in Edinburgh and at a centre in Hamilton, South Lanarkshir­e.
