Toon scout Carr quits

- BY SIMON BIRD

RAFA BENITEZ increased his power at Newcastle after chief scout Graham Carr departed last night.

The Toon boss has taken total control of new signings this summer after Carr left by mutual consent.

Benitez had worked with Carr, a strong ally of St James’ Park owner Mike Ashley, for the past year.

Carr was a success early on bringing in Yohan Cabaye, Mathieu Debuchy, Vurnon Anita, Moussa Sissoko, Papiss Cisse and Cheick Tiote.

More recent recruits including Remy Cabella and Florian Thauvin have been less successful.
