PIRES BEGS FOR SPREE ..AND TITLE
ROBERT PIRES has told Arsene Wenger he needs to break the bank to win the league next season.
The Arsenal legend insists his old club can end their wait for a first title since 2004 if they “buy some players” and “spend a lot of money.”
And he reckons it will take a combination of keeping Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez plus signing Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe and Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette for Arsenal to be crowned champions.
They are trying to agree new deals with star men Sanchez and Ozil while Mbappe and Lacazette are two of Wenger’s top transfer targets.
Pires, a member of the last Arsenal squad to lift the title 13 years ago, said: “The most important thing is to keep Sanchez and Ozil and buy Lacazette and Mbappe.
“Arsenal can do both. They can extend the contracts of Sanchez and Ozil and why not buy two or three?
“If Arsene buys some players they can lift the Premier League trophy. To buy some players, you need to spend a lot of money – and why not?
“The first objective is to lift a trophy at the end of the season. Mbappe is a great player who has good potential. He is very expensive but in the UK now anything is possible. Lacazette is a great player.”
Arsenal would have to smash the world transfer record for Mbappe, 18, whose valuation is in excess of £100million and who is also wanted by a number of Europe’s top clubs.
Fellow Frenchman Lacazette (above) has a £60m price tag on his head. Liverpool and Manchester United are also monitoring him.
