KASPER BORN AND BRED TO MAKE DAD’S DREAM TRUE

- BY JAMES NURSEY

PETER SCHMEICHEL says it would be “a fantastic dream” if his son follows in his footsteps as Manchester United’s No.1.

With Real Madrid keen on David de Gea, Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel is among possible contenders to replace him at Old Trafford. The Denmark international emerged from his dad’s famous shadow in the Foxes’ title-winning campaign of 2015-16.

And Schmeichel senior, who made 398 appearances for the Reds from 1991 to 1999 and lifted 10 major trophies, has backed his boy to thrive at United.

The 53-year-old (left, with a young Kasper and the Premier League trophy) said: “Trying to be neutral and unbiased and not like a father, I think he’s done well enough to convince everybody he can play at the highest level. The doubts were there when he first went into the Premier League, but he proved he’s good enough and in the Champions League I thought he did really well.

“If clubs need a really good goalkeeper, well he is somebody who can be trusted.”
