Q I’m worried about getting bowel cancer. My mother died of it and I’m scared she’s passed it on to me. How would I know if I had it? A I understand your concern. Having a family history of bowel cancer is linked to a higher risk of the disease, as is age, so talk to your doctor if you’re worried.

It’s important to know what your normal bowel habits are so you can spot any changes like bleeding from your bottom or blood in your poo (this can be red or black, making your poo look dark like tar). A change to your normal bowel habit, such as looser motions, could be a sign, as could suddenly becoming constipated. Report any kind of abdominal pain, lump in your tummy or unexplained weight loss to your doctor. None of these symptoms need to be sinister, but it’s better to play safe and tell your GP if you notice any one of them.
