The anti-apartheid icon had been receiving intensive medical care at home for a lung infection after spending three months in hospital. His funeral took place 10 days later following more than a week of national mourning. Mandela is still often named as an inspiration by global figures. He was once asked who was his inspiration and replied: “Lucas Radebe, the captain of South Africa.” The former Leeds skipper moved to Elland Road from Kaizer Chiefs and was affectionately known as The Chief by his team-mates.

SAM BAILEY, another X Factor winner, claimed the Christmas top spot. The former prison officer, 36, hit number one with debut single Skyscraper.
