INCE: KIDS LACK GOLD STANDARD

- BY JAMES NURSEY

PAUL INCE has warned against hailing any of England’s young sides as the next “golden generation”.

It has been a fine summer for the Young Lions, after winning the Toulon Tournament and the Under-20 World Cup.

Aidy Boothroyd’s U-21 side play Germany tonight in the semifinals of the Euros in Poland.

But ex-midfielder Ince, capped 52 times, said: “I think the golden generation was 1966, they are the ones who won the World Cup.

“You are only a golden generation if you win things. I thought we had a golden generation in ’98 and ’96 but we didn’t win anything.

“We get carried away but it is great to see the kids doing well and all the stuff at St George’s Park seems to be paying off.

“We won a World Cup but, if you look at some of the teams the U-20s beat, they were not the biggest sides.

“It’s great the U-21s are in the semis but the performances have not been great.”
