RAF strikes help drive IS from Mosul

- BY CHRIS HUGHES Defence and Security Editor

THE battle for Mosul should be over in days, an Iraqi army chief said, after RAF pilots scored a number of devastating strikes against Islamic State.

Up to 350 militants are holed up in the Old City, dug in among civilians in crumbling houses riddled with booby traps.

Counter terror boss Lt Gen Abdul Ghani al-Assadi said IS had “lost its fighting spirit” and called for them to “surrender or die”.

Asked when IS will be defeated, he said: “In very few days, God willing.”

In the past week the RAF has killed dozens of IS thugs, hitting machine gun positions and sniper hideouts, and destroying several suicide vehicles.

About 50,000 civilians remain trapped in the city.
