Our front page called on women to use their vote on behalf of their husbands who were away serving their country. Our “I’ll vote for him” campaign urged female voters to back the Labour Party in the general election to help create a better country for the returning servicemen.

60 YEARS AGO (1957)

The Medical Research Council announced there was a direct link between smoking and lung cancer. The Government said a campaign would be instigated by health authoritie­s.

40 YEARS AGO (1977)

Violence broke out between pickets and the police, and the Labour Home Secretary Merlyn Rees was jeered, during a strike at the Grunwick film processing factory in North London, where workers were fighting for union recognitio­n.
