THE WORSE FOR WEAR
# Seeing your report of boys turning up to school in skirts and pupils being sent home from Bishop of Winchester Academy for not wearing blazers in the 30C temperatures last week (Mirror, June 23), I recall how at my prep school in the 1960s – a time not noted for “child-centredness” – in very hot weather we were allowed to ditch our blazers, shoes and shirts.
I feel a certain contempt for state schools that blindly enforce bogus traditional standards in the 21st century. Nicholas Taylor Sandhurst, Berks # Politicians and officials allowed inferior cladding to be used on Grenfell Tower, which led to the terrible fire. The same politicians have been pushing for fracking. Could this be another disaster waiting to happen when the water table is poisoned? P Cusack, Rotherham South Yorks # I agree with Garry Larkin (June 21) – how much longer do we have to put up with Camelot running the Lottery? It has managed to turn what was a simple draw into a joke.
Its obsession with huge rollover jackpots has left us with minor prizes that are, quite frankly, rubbish. J Foster Hall Green, Birmingham # I certainly hope that Boris Johnson never becomes Prime Minister.
He doesn’t seem to think about what he’s saying most of the time. He might have a good turn of phrase, but that is one-dimensional.
