Redmond Too close to keeper JOHN TERRY is ready to sign for Aston Villa when his Chelsea contract expires this weekend.

Terry, 36, becomes a free agent this Saturday and he looks set to drop into the Championship.

Villa are offering him a £5million, one-year deal after outbidding rivals Birmingham City.

Blues boss Harry Redknapp is resigned to missing out on Terry, who will get a bigger package from Villa, with huge bonuses for promotion.

Villa’s Chinese owner Tony Xia has made it a personal mission to beat neighbours Birmingham to the defender’s signature.

Despite Premier League interest from West Brom, Terry is willing to drop into the Championship, as he fancies a new challenge and, with potential promotion, the chance to lift more silverware.

He is reluctant to play against his beloved Chelsea next season with a rival Premier League club.

Terry and his agent were recently pictured golfing with Villa boss Steve Bruce and son Alex in Portugal.

Villa are due to unveil a new kit and sponsor on Saturday and Terry’s signing could be announced too.
