Shashi needs a kidney

-

SHASHI Matharu has waited 20 years for a kidney transplant after being born with problems.

Shashi, 36, of West Bromwich, believes England is behind the rest of Europe and said kidneys were moved from Germany to Spain. She said: “How long do you expect someone to wait – what’s fair? I’m lucky to be alive. I have to have four-hour treatments three times a week and if I don’t I can die. It takes a big chunk out of your life, you have to plan everything. It’s taken its toll on me but you choose between life and death.

“The longer you’re on dialysis the more it will affect you. There’s a lot of black and Asian people on dialysis but not a lot of black and Asian donors. This is why we have to change it to the opt-out system because it’s not working.”
