Ex-champ for Conor

- BY NEIL McLEMAN Tennis Correspondent

FEDERER, McEnroe and Rod Laver were speaking at Wimbledon at the unveiling of the new Laver Cup trophy – a team competition where Europe will play the Rest of the World in Prague in September.

Murray was forced to withdraw from the Miami Open due to a right elbow injury. That, coupled with a virus picked up prior to his return to London, caused him to miss the Davis Cup quarter-final with France in April. It was another month-long absence.

Murray then suffered another bout of illness in the build-up to the French Open. Fortunately, he was able to recover in time to play in Paris and reached the semi-finals before being ousted in five sets by Stan Wawrinka.

Any momentum Murray built in France was ended on the grass at Queen’s when he suffered a shock first-round elimination. In a season where he has struggled for fitness and form, a “sore hip” has now hampered Murray’s Wimbledon preparations. CONOR McGREGOR will spar with former world champion Paulie Malignaggi to help him prepare for Floyd Mayweather.

The retired New Yorker has not fought since he was stopped by Birmingham’s Sam Eggington back in March.

But he revealed he has been invited to spar with McGregor (above) ahead of his boxing debut in Las Vegas on August 26.

“I was surprised,” said Malignaggi. “I haven’t really been training. So I’ve started working out the details to spar with McGregor.

“It’s good to take part in a training camp without me actually having to make weight, which is fun.”
