Tories need foodbank lesson

-

A TORY MP is demanding a fresh parliamentary inquiry into soaring foodbank use.

Backbencher Heidi Allen warned fellow Conservatives not to “stick our heads in the sand” after a powerful report by academics and foodbank operator the Trussell Trust.

She said: “We have to be not scared of this, we have to embrace this data and say it’s telling us something. “We have to listen to it.” The biggest ever study of UK foodbanks showed 20% of users go hungry several times a year, with some skipping meals for days at a time.

Separate figures show 2.5 million English homes struggle with fuel bills.

Brexit inflation “puts more pressure on households”, said Ms Allen, adding: “Something is going wrong.”

She wants a Work and Pensions Committee probe about “things going on in job centres and foodbanks.”
