1 in 10 in UK is foreign-born

NEARLY one in 10 people living in the UK last year was a foreign citizen.

The Organisati­on for Economic Cooperatio­n and Developmen­t said 5.95 million are from overseas.

But asylum applicatio­ns fell last year for the first time since 2010, down 7% to 30,600.

For every million people in the UK, 593 asylum applicatio­ns were filed in 2016. The biggest number of applicants were from Iran, at 4,780, followed by Pakistan (3,701) and Iraq (3,644).
