Monsoon to bring soggy end to June

- BY NICOLA BARTLETT

IT’S been one of the hottest Junes ever... but now prepare for a monsoon.

After 9cm of rain fell on Suffolk in 24 hours and yesterday’s soaking in the North, more big downpours are forecast today in the North and West.

The culprit, a European Monsoon, is a mysterious phenomenon that heralds a return of westerly winds after a weakening in late spring.

Meteorologists think it may be linked to warming over continental Europe.

This weekend is forecast to be drier, however wet and windy weather is expected from midweek in the North and West.

Last week’s heatwave hit 34.5C in London on June 21, the second hottest June day since records began 358 years ago.
