WAT ABOUT THE NFL?

-

LIONS star Anthony Watson admits he would love a crack at the NFL. Watson plays the biggest rugby match of his life tomorrow when he goes up against the All Blacks’ new wing sensation Rieko Ioane. Ioane, 20, marked his full debut with a try double in the first Test and is the name on everybody’s lips here in New Zealand. That has allowed Watson to come in under the radar – but the 23-year-old is also a special talent, as 13 tries in 26 Tests for England bear witness. His speed coach, Jonas Dodoo, says he has the tools to become a world-class sprinter. And it is that skill set which impressed NFL scouts during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, with the Surrey-born ace admitting for the first time that American Football does appeal.

“The NFL is definitely something I would consider,” said Watson, a New York Giants fan. “The NFL is huge and I can’t deny it is definitely something that would interest me.

“I love the way athletes express themselves over there. And we are now in the entertainment business.

“That’s why I never had any issues with, say, Chris Ashton’s swallow dive.

“Some thought it was arrogant, I completely disagree, let him enjoy himself, let him celebrate.”
