Tories kick those Britain relies on

- FIONA PARKER Edited by

I am appalled. Politicians praise the emergency services when a terror attack occurs, or a tragedy, such as the Grenfell Tower fire, but then treat them like this. It is hypocritical given the pay rises MPs accept and the expenses they claim.

They create near poverty for people who are highly trained, while ministers on May’s front bench are mostly unqualified to do the jobs they have. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt doesn’t have a qualification in healthcare, yet he’s responsible for the NHS?

That they cheered when the pay cap was supported is an insult to dedicated, altruistic people.

I was sickened to hear on the radio that so many women rely on food banks for sanitary products. This is of course due to Tory austerity. How we can consider ourselves to be a caring society is beyond me. The cruel 1% wage cap on public sector workers is inhumane, particularly as inflation is starting to bite. Now it is a choice between food and sanitary products for millions. If Theresa May had an ounce of decency she would remove this disgraceful cap.

Bill Cook Teignmouth, Devon

Labour’s motion to remove the 1% wages cap has been undone by the Tory government with the support of their new DUP “honourable

friends”. I wonder, as some nurses continue to struggle to make ends meet, what they will think of a democratic system that permits MPs from a narrow-minded party to prop up a discredited, incompetent Tory Government in exchange for cash?

Paul Methven, Winscombe, Somerset

Britain has suffered major terror attacks and the horrific Grenfell Tower fire in the last few months and, at each of these, our emergency services have gone above and beyond, often risking their own lives. This is the treatment they get. There

is something very wrong when the money which could have been used to raise their living standards is spent on paying a party to prop up the calamitous May. It is truly donkeys leading lions.

Delys Wallace, Bradford

It’s disgraceful that Theresa May can find £1billion to give to the DUP to help her stay in government, yet public sector workers see living standards fall.

Kevin Bowman, Brighton

Some MPs cheered when the pay cap amendment failed. That cheering is an insult to altruistic, qualified, dedicated professionals who we all rely on.

Terry Maunder, Leeds

What an insult to our nurses. The Tories have given £1bn for DUP support, now they should cough up for our nurses. Protests by angry, hard-up nurses have been happening across Britain as the Tory pay cap bites. They do a top job and should be paid their worth. The Tories seem to find money off the magic money tree when they need to. I only hope Jeremy Corbyn gives the Tories hell and forces them to think again.
