Stindl goal catches Chile cold

- BY DARREN LEWIS

JURGEN KLOPP is six weeks away from the game that will shape his Liverpool future.

July 12 July 14 July 19 July 22 July 29 Aug 1 Aug 2 Aug 5 LARS STINDL struck the only goal as Germany won the Confederations Cup in St Petersburg.

The forward tapped home after a Chile defensive blunder midway through the first half, as world champions Germany added another major trophy to their collection.

Copa America winners Chile wasted a glut of chances, while a superb stoppage-time save from keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen helped Joachim Low’s men win the tournament for the first time.

Germany had snatched a 20th-minute lead with their first meaningful effort on goal.

Defender Marcelo Diaz gifted Timo Werner the ball on the edge of the box and the Germany striker ran on and turned the ball across goal for Stindl (above) to tap into an empty net.

Serbian referee Milorad Mazic called on the video assistant referee just after the hour when Gonzalo Jara appeared to strike Werner in the jaw with his elbow as he challenged for the ball.

But the VAR review courted controversy when Mazic only opted to show the fortunate Chile defender a yellow card.

Ter Stegen denied Chile in time added on, diving low to his left to keep out Sanchez’s free-kick from just outside the area.

Earlier Portugal had claimed third place with a fiery 2-1 extra-time victory over Mexico in Moscow.

The European champions were within seconds of losing in normal time after central defender Luis Neto had put through his own goal after 54 minutes.

But Pepe equalised in injury time before Adrien Silva converted from the spot in extra-time.
