Will you take horn this job?

A CITY is seeking a hornblower to help preserve a tradition dating to 886AD.

A horn is sounded four times at 9pm every day in Ripon, North Yorks, to “sound the watch”.

The council offers £26.16 for three hours a week. One of the current blowers, Wayne Cobbett, 30, said: “I feel proud to be involved in such an ancient tradition.”

The practice began after Alfred the Great visited and gave the city a horn, which was adopted by its night watchmen.
