Prison for man who tore veil off Muslim as she shopped
A MAN has been jailed for tearing the veil from a terrified Muslim woman.
Peter Scotter, 56, attacked her as she shopped with her son during the EU Referendum, yelling at her: “You are in our country now, you stupid f ****** Muslim. Take that f ***** off. I’m taking my f ****** country back”.
People who ran to help as she lay on the floor were shocked and one shop assistant was in tears. Scotter, from Sunderland, admitted racially aggravated assault and harassment and was given 15 months. Newcastle crown court heard his victim did not want him jailed as he was being treated for cancer of the mouth. Tony Hawks, defending, said: “It’s no coincidence this occurred within a week or so of the Brexit referendum where the press and politicians were banging the drum about taking our country back.”
