RETIRED church minister John is preparing to make the 1,000-mile round trip from Cornwall to visit his son Mike in a Scottish prison.

Father Michael (Sean Bean) has been endlessly desperate to mend the lives of his broken parishioners.

What with Christina’s (Anna Friel) dodgy pension claim, the police shooting of Vernon and Roz’s suicide, it’s hardly been easy.

Plus, he’s had all those horrible childhood abuse flashbacks he’s had to contend with.

In this episode, the inquest into Vernon’s death begins, with Father Michael, Helen (Muna Otaru) and the officers in question all being summoned to give evidence. There’s a tense scene as PC Andrew Powell (Mark Stanley) has to make a tough call – does he support his colleagues or tell the truth? Elsewhere, the Demichelis children are struggling to cope and Chloe vents her frustration in a rather drastic fashion. As everything and everyone reaches crisis point, the priest wonders if perhaps God is trying to tell him something – like choose a different profession. Either way, it all leads to a thoroughly moving finale.
