Jersey abuse home ‘should be bulldozed’
THE children’s home at the centre of the Jersey abuse scandal should be demolished, a report says.
An inquiry into decades of abuse at Haut de la Garenne added the State of Jersey “proved to be an ineffectual and neglectful substitute parent”.
It heard there were 553 offences from 1947 to 2004, with more than half at Haut de la Garenne.
The report said the buildings there are a reminder of an “unhappy past or shameful history”.
It said: “We recommend consideration be given as to how the buildings can be demolished and any services on the site should be in modern buildings bearing no resemblance to what went before.”
