NEW CONFIDENCE SETS HAPPY HEATHER ON WAY

-

HEATHER WATSON is on a roll – just as the British No.2 predicted she would be. Watson continued her good form from Eastbourne last week, where she reached the semis, by getting her Wimbledon campaign off to a winning start.

It was not without a few wobbles as she squandered three match points and served for the match twice at 5-1 and 5-4 before downing Belgian Maryna Zanevska 6-1 7-6.

Watson (left) will now face world No.19 Anastasija Sevastova in the second round tomorrow.

She said: “I feel there’s been a change the last few months. I feel more settled.

“I have my coaching team sorted out now, and I’m happy with it. Because of that I feel I’ve had structure in my practices. I’ve just been enjoying my tennis a lot more.

“I’ve been putting in the work. I said a few weeks ago I feel like a run is bound to come soon. And I feel confident in my game that it will click soon. I keep believing in that.”

Naomi Broady failed to join Watson in round two after being beaten 6-4 6-2 by Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu.
