BEDENE’S TRUE BRIT
ALJAZ BEDENE declared himself a great Brit after coming through an epic five-setter against Ivo Karlovic.
Slovenian-born Bedene is a British passport holder but has been refused permission by the International Tennis Federation to play alongside Andy Murray & Co in the Davis Cup.
But Bedene (right) was roared on by a partisan crowd on Court Three as he survived a staggering 44 aces from big-hitting Karlovic to win 6-7 7-6 6-7 7-6 8-6.
Remarkably, the only break of serve came in the final game of a match that stretched towards four-and-a-half hours. There have been suggestions Bedene was having second thoughts about continuing his fight to represent Britain but he was blown away by the support at Wimbledon. He said: “I was getting goosebumps. I’m a British citizen and I love playing here. It was fantastic being out there. I didn’t want to leave.” After disposing of the No.21 seed, Bedene will now face Damir Dzumhur – and the Bosnian owes Bedene, 27, a favour. The Brit said: “I have known Damir for a long time. I actually lent him two match shirts and shorts for today’s match. But matches are different.”
