Park ride girl ‘sucked under water as staff failed to help’
THEME park staff failed to help a youngster killed after falling from a water ride on a school trip, it has been claimed.
Evha Jannath, 11, died on Splash Canyon Rapids at Drayton Manor, Staffs, in May. Witnesses claimed she tried to wade back to her boat after falling in, her local MP Keith Vaz told MPs.
Mr Vaz said: “At that stage she received no help and was sucked under the water.”
He said Evha’s parents Muhammed Islam, 47, and Musammath Nahar, 43, of Leicester, remain “shocked”. A brother of a girl in the same raft as Evha said: “Other girls were shouting for guards who didn’t believe she was in there.” Work and Pensions minister Penny Mordaunt told the Commons the park’s procedures are being probed and promised “appropriate action”. An inquest is due in November. Evha died of chest injuries, said a postmortem. Park bosses refused to comment.
