ESTHER Rantzen is in talks with the BBC to bring back classic show That’s Life! after 23 years.

The series was a mix of hard-hitting investigations and light entertainment, and ran from 1973 to 1994. At its peak, it had more than 20 million viewers – and bosses think many of its campaigning issues and amusing features would appeal to modern audiences.

It is understood Esther, 77, would be offered a role behind the camera, possibly as a producer. Asked about That’s Life! returning, she would only say: “There is a possibility. A twinkle in someone’s eye. I say no more than that.”

But a BBC source said: “It is early days but if everything is signed off the plan is to keep the concept the same. It was about fighting for people’s rights, raising awareness and also having fun.

“The world has changed but those are still the ingredients of a hit show, especially when you look at the success of The One Show and Watchdog. It seems an obvious show to bring back.”

The original aim of That’s Life!, fronted and produced by Esther, was consumer protection – particularly safety issues. The show stressed the importance of wearing seat belts, which became law in the 1980s. Esther also developed ChildLine in response to some features.

And in 1985 the show raised awareness of the need for child organ transplants by documenting the death of Ben Hardwick, a toddler with liver disease.

The BBC declined to comment when asked about the meetings with Esther.
