Edmund is finally ninth time lucky

- BY ADRIAN KAJUMBA

KYLE EDMUND enjoyed some home comforts at Wimbledon as he broke his SW19 duck at the ninth attempt.

Edmund came back from a set down to win his first-round match against fellow Brit Alexander Ward 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-1.

Before overcoming the world No.869, Edmund (below) had lost all eight of his singles and doubles matches at Wimbledon.

The world No.50 said: “It’s the one tournament you want to do well in more than any other. To actually say that I’ve won one now is nice.”

The 22-year-old’s levelheadedness served him well against Ward as he initially struggled to get to grips with his rival’s displays of power.

Ward built on an opening game break to take the first set.

But Edmund soon regained the momentum, clinching his first break in the sixth game of the second set before rattling off five games in a row to seize control of the second and eventually finish off the match.

Edmund, who faces world No.14 Gael Monfils in the second round, was the day’s only Brit survivor after Brydan Klein and James Ward both crashed out.
