41 YEARS AGO (1976)
Our front page showed the raid by 200 Israeli commandos, led by Dan Shomron, to free 104 hostages at Uganda’s Entebbe airport. Four Palestinian and German hijackers who had taken over an Air France airbus, 45 Ugandan soldiers and three hostages were killed.
28 YEARS AGO (1989)
Ronald Reagan’s former aide Col Oliver North got a threeyear suspended sentence and a $150,000 fine for his part in the Iran-Contra arms affair. It was overturned in 1991.
42 YEARS AGO (1975)
American Arthur Ashe became the first black tennis player to win Wimbledon after beating Jimmy Connors 3-1. He retired in 1979 after a heart attack. In 1992 he announced he had Aids following a blood transfusion in 1983. He died in 1993.
