Gunners to carry on spending after £52M record buy

- BY JOHN CROSS

ARSENAL last night sealed a record-breaking £52million deal for Alexandre Lacazette – and are prepared to carry on spending.

The Gunners will now move for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar, with Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez their back-up option. Mirror Sport can reveal that Monaco have quoted Arsenal £80m for Lemar as they do not want to sell, and a deal

for the 21-year-old (below) now seems unlikely.

That has opened the door for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to go for Mahrez, with the Foxes braced for an approach but no official bid yet made.

Wenger has admitted his admiration for Mahrez and wants to shake up his squad even further after Lyon striker Lacazette’s arrival – which beat the previous record when Mesut Ozil signed for £42.5m in 2013. Lacazette, 26, had a medical yesterday after agreeing a five-year deal and is expected to be Arsenal’s top earner on £200,000 a week.
