How the Tories’ manifesto got hit for six
THERESA May has been forced to ditch manifesto pledges after surrendering the Tories’ majority. They include:
■ FOX HUNTING The PM wanted a free vote on bringing back the blood sport but a U-turn was slipped out in a written parliamentary answer.
■ FREE SCHOOL LUNCHES The manifesto committed to axing free lunches for all but the poorest infant schoolchildren but Schools Minister Nick Gibb yesterday scrapped the plan.
■ SOCIAL CARE FUNDING The “dementia tax” plans were booted into the long grass with a consultation expected on how to pay for care.
■ WINTER FUEL PAYMENTS The manifesto said the grants worth up to £300 for OAPs would be means-tested but that plan has been ditched.
■ GRAMMAR SCHOOLS Mrs May wanted a new wave of selective schools but a spokesman admitted last month: “This won’t be in the session.”
■ ENERGY PRICE CAP The hyped plan has been watered down, sparking anger among some backbench Tories.
