Woman who wed her rescuer dies aged 92

-

A WOMAN who survived Auschwitz and married the Scottish soldier who rescued her from the Nazis has died aged 92 with him by her side.

Edith “Eci” Mackay, a Hungarian Jew who died last week after a bout of pneumonia, met John, 96, after he saved prisoners being marched from Auschwitz to another concentration camp.

She met John at a dance organised by troops shortly afterwards. They married on July 17, 1946, and had two children. They later lived together in Balcarres Care Home in Broughty Ferry, Dundee.

Vera Scimgeour, deputy manager, said: “All her family was with her, John was with her as well. It was sad for them. He just totally doted on her and she doted on him, it was so sad.”
