50 refugees die at sea on way to Spain

- BY LUCY THORNTON

AROUND 50 desperate migrants fleeing to Spain by dinghy were swept away when they were struck by a massive wave.

It is believed to be the worst tragedy so far in the crisis hitting the Costas and brings the death toll this year to 118.

The Spanish coastguard said they had abandoned the search for survivors.

The horrific loss of life was only revealed when a youth and two men found clinging exhausted to the deflated dinghy were taken to hospital in Spain.

They said their boat, which had set off from Morocco, was hit by the wave and “they saw the other people disappear”.

Meanwhile, 178 adults and children in five boats were plucked to safety.
