Tragic OAP’s 21 hours on a trolley in A&E

- BY JEZ HEMMING

AN OAP died after being left on an A&E trolley for 21 hours, an inquest heard.

The first her daughter knew of her death was when a doctor spoke of her in the past tense, the hearing was told.

Catherine Roberts, 83, died five days after arriving at Glan Clwyd hospital in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire, with gastroenteritis.

She had spent two hours in an ambulance because the A&E department was full. She was then transferred to a trolley.

Ruthin coroner Nicola Jones ruled Mrs Roberts, of Corwen, died of natural causes but said those in charge of nursing at the time “were missing really big issues”.

Alison Griffith, assistant director of nursing, apologised for her treatment.
