Transgende­r welcome win

THE Church of England has voted overwhelmi­ng in favour of welcoming transgende­rs.

The General Synod backed a motion stating there was a need for transgende­r people to be “welcomed and affirmed in their parish church” as part of the “process” of transition.

Rev Chris Newlands, the Vicar of Lancaster, who moved the motion, said: “I hope we can make a powerful statement to say we believe that trans people are cherished and loved by God, who created them.”

■ The number of children aged between three and seven being referred to gender identity clinics has quadrupled to 84 in five years, NHS figures reveal.
