- JOANNA LUMLEY’S INDIA

ITV, 9pm She’s always cheerful and upbeat, but there are several difficult moments for Joanna in tonight’s instalment of her jaunt around India.

In Mumbai, she has to fight her fear of heights when she visits the 56th floor of the World One Tower – currently under construction and due to be the world’s tallest residential block.

And 80 miles inland at the Ellora Caves, one of the largest rock-cut temple complexes in the world, vertigo-sufferer Joanna encounters a sheer drop. “Even leaning over makes me terrified,” she says.

But it’s her exploration of the caste system in India, and the Dallit community (formerly known as the “untouchables”) that stops Joanna in her tracks.

She visits the home of a Dallit family who lost their son to a violent act of discrimination when three attackers covered him in diesel and kerosene and burned him to death.

Joanna connects with the family as they show her pictures of their son, but is visibly shocked and emotional. “It’s just unbearable,” she says. “This has no place in the modern world.”
