Brexit could be a never-ending saga

-

THE Leave campaigners in the referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU led voters to believe that exiting would be simple. That was never going to be the case.

There are so many complex issues to be resolved in our negotiations with the other 27 EU member states before the Government can even get to the stage of presenting a “deal” to Parliament.

Lib Dem leadership contender Sir Vince Cable is right – Brexit is so complicated, it might never happen.

Responsibility for the whole sorry saga lies firmly at the feet of the Tories. Christine Hanks, Woking, Surrey # Will someone kindly tell Vincent Cable that Brexit is going to happen. I voted to leave Europe for the simple reason that I’m sick and tired of being told what my country can and can’t do, and I’m sick of foreign companies buying up our services. I want to see the fishing industry back in business and all the other wonderful things we had until the money-grabbers got hold of them. Yes, it’s going to hurt for a bit, but what we’re going to come out with will be amazing. We will have trade deals with whoever we want and it won’t cost us the earth. So, please stop treating us like we don’t know what we’ve done – we know exactly. Pauline Hardy, Liverpool Did the Leavers vote for a devaluation of the pound and hence an

#increase in the rate of inflation? Theresa May and David Davis are in a quandary as to what to do and leaving with no deal looks to be a real possibility. This would mean economic suicide for UK manufacturing and a loss of London’s position as a major financial centre.

Now that the economic consequences of leaving the EU are so clear, maybe we should hold another referendum. As it is, we are leaving on a minority vote when you consider that many did not actually use their vote. Granville Grey, Lydney, Glos # Brexit means Brexit, or so the Prime Minister keeps telling us, but now Chancellor Philip Hammond has challenged International Trade Secretary Liam Fox to assess if new trade deals with non-EU countries will compensate for leaving the customs union.

Who on earth does he think he is? We voted to leave the EU and that means in all respects. We didn’t tell these self-important know-it-alls to prevaricate, nor to go cherry picking to their hearts’ content through all the bureaucracy that the EU has spewed out over the last 65 years. Fred Nicholson, Westcliff, Essex # Liam Fox, David Davis and the rest of the Tory Brexiteers answer questions about the consequences of leaving the EU with either, “I don’t know”, or some platitude about making Britain great again.

These extremists clearly haven’t got a clue where Brexit is taking us and yet continue to drag the country towards financial ruin. A recent poll showed 54% now favour remaining in the EU, so why are we letting them get away with it? Mick Turner, New Ash Green, Kent # I’m now at the stage with Brexit where I don’t care what happens. It looks as if it will just go on for ever with each side stabbing the other in the back. Roy Mounsey, Rochdale Gtr Manchester
