Wade tips brilliant Konta to reach Wimbledon final
JO KONTA was the toast of the nation after securing a place in the semi-finals – and was then backed to go all the way by the last British woman to win Wimbledon.
Inspired Konta (above) toppled Simona Halep in a stunning display to become the first British female since Virginia Wade in 1978 to make the last four.
With Wade watching on from the Royal Box, Konta hit
back to overcome world No.2 Halep 6-7 7-6 6-4 in a Centre Court thriller, setting up a huge clash against five-times champ Venus Williams, 37.
And Wade said: “I don’t think Venus will choke so I think Konta will have to win the match, but I think it’s absolutely on the cards.
“I’m surprised it’s taken so long. It’s fine to be the last British women’s winner here, but it’s better to have plenty of British players to win. It’s a win-win situation frankly and I’m thrilled for her. It was a stunning performance.”
Konta, who is now just two wins away from her first Major title, said: “To be in the semi-finals of my home Slam, and to do that in front of a full Centre Court is special.
“I do get that home support, which I don’t get anywhere else. I guess it makes it that much sweeter.”
Konta, 26, has won three of her five previous battles against US star Williams.
And she added: “Age definitely isn’t a factor with Venus. She’s a tremendous champion and I feel humbled to share a court with her.”
