Probe into abuse of MPs as Abbott reveals vile attacks
THERESA May ordered an inquiry into abuse and intimidation of MPs as Diane Abbott revealed the shocking extent of the attacks on her.
The Prime Minister asked the Commons Standards Committee to probe problems during the election, saying she been “horrified by stories from colleagues”.
Her move came yesterday as MPs held a debate on the abuse. Shadow Home Secretary Ms Abbott told of rape threats, being called a “fat, black, piece of sh**” and “n ***** over and over again”. Labour’s Paula Sherriff said she could not remember a “single day” without being abused in two years. In a veiled rebuke of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, accused of not tackling attacks by his supporters, Tory Simon Hart said the problem had “gathered momentum” recently.
