THANK THESE TEST VETS
# On November 8, it will be 60 years since the UK succeeded in detonating a thermonuclear device as part of the Grapple test series.
These tests, carried out in Australia from 1952, saw the UK recognised as the third nuclear power. But there was little understanding of the long-term effects to health, personnel or future generations.
Out of an estimated 22,000 people involved, it’s thought that fewer than 3,000 are still alive. And as well as the test veterans, their families have also suffered ill health. Now would be an appropriate time for the country to show its appreciation by awarding a medal to all nuclear test veterans. Colin Moir, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
