Former skipper backed to put in long hard shift at the crease to salvage England’s fading hopes
SOUTH AFRICA are confident of completing a demolition job after opening up a few ‘cracks’ in England’s armour.
Captain Faf du Plessis and his men have surprised everyone but themselves by their renaissance at Nottingham.
Dean Elgar, stand-in skipper for the Lord’s debacle, and Hashim Amla led the way to leave England facing a mountain of runs to win.
Elgar (left) said: “According to the stats, a successful run-chase shouldn’t happen, even though the game has evolved. The wicket is getting better, but the odd ball is squatting a bit.
“It will be hard work for us to get 10 wickets but our bowlers are looking forward to it.
“We have opened up a few cracks in their side, and that will be brilliant for us in this series.
“I’m not surprised by the swing since Lord’s. We’ve been playing brilliant Test cricket for two or three years as one of the best teams in the world.”
