UK medicine trails Europe over cancer
BRITAIN is lagging behind Europe at treating cancer, a report warns.
The study, commissioned by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, also highlights lower survival rates.
Compared with the average for Europe, we trail on nine out of 10 cancers for survival – including bowel, lung, breast, prostate and kidney.
The UK also spends 20% less per person on cancer than other EU economies.
ABPI’s Richard Torbett said: “This should be a wake-up call for the UK to refocus the way we tackle cancer across the board.”
A Department of Health spokesman said: “This report does not accurately reflect our current performance on cancer.”
