U-turner May’s £1.3bn schools promise sparks MPs’ outrage

- BY BEN GLAZE Deputy Political Editor and DAN BLOOM Political Reporter

THERESA May performed yet another U-turn last night by caving into Labour demands for extra money for schools.

But angry MPs accused the Tories of “robbing Peter to pay Paul” because the £1.3billion will be stripped from other areas of the Department for Education’s budget.

Education Secretary Justine Greening announced the money for schools in England over the next two years. Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner said: “Astoundingly, this has all been funded without a penny of new money from the Treasury. She added: “Per pupil, funding will still fall over the course of this Parliament unless further action is taken urgently.” The Lib Dems said: “It is a desperate attempt to pull the wool over people’s eyes.”
