I’m Shaw I can still be a star

INJURY-HIT LUKE OUT TO PROVE HE CAN DO A JOB FOR UNITED

- FROM DAVID McDONNELL in Salt Lake City

LUKE SHAW has vowed to prove his worth after a nightmare start to life at Old Trafford.

Shaw (left) has suffered a wretched first three seasons at Manchester United after his £27million move there from Southampton. Fitness issues, questions over his focus and a broken leg that virtually ruled him out of his second season at United have all blighted his time there. The England man missed the final three weeks of last season with an ankle injury and is working his way back to fitness on United’s US tour. Shaw is unlikely to be fit for the start of the season and will find himself behind Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian in the battle to impress boss Jose Mourinho in the leftback slot.

But Shaw, 22, who has played just 47 games in three years at United, said: “I feel this is my season to prove myself and I’m feeling in good shape.

“I want to show everyone I believe in myself and show the manager that.

“I’m working hard and been doing rehab each day. It’s been coming along really good. I’ve been running on a treadmill and doing my leg weights and making sure my foot is strong.

“I’ve also been doing a lot of cardiovascular work to keep me in good shape.

“The sooner I’m back the better because I want to be playing.

“I’m in a positive frame of mind and don’t want to talk too much about the past, but I do think that I’ve been unlucky with injuries.

“My leg and now this. It was unlucky. I want to put them in the past.”
